Chemical Exfoliation vs Physical Exfoliation: What Dermatologists Recommend

Exfoliation is essential for removing dead skin cells, revealing a brighter complexion, and allowing your serums to penetrate effectively. But the method you choose matters—a lot.

Physical Exfoliation: The Scrub Problem

Physical exfoliants use friction to slough off dead skin. Think face scrubs with crushed walnut shells, sugar, or microbeads, plus cleansing brushes and exfoliating mitts.

The problem? These particles often have jagged edges that create microscopic tears in the skin barrier. Over time, this leads to redness, sensitivity, and broken capillaries. That satisfying 'scrubbed clean' feeling? It's often early-stage barrier damage.

Chemical Exfoliation: The Smarter Approach

Chemical exfoliants dissolve the bonds between dead skin cells, allowing them to shed evenly and gently. No tearing, no friction, no micro-damage.

AHAs (Alpha Hydroxy Acids)

Water-soluble acids that work on the skin's surface. They're ideal for:

  • Dullness and uneven tone

  • Fine lines and texture

  • Dry or sun-damaged skin

Glycolic acid (the smallest AHA molecule) penetrates deeply for dramatic resurfacing. Lactic acid is gentler and also hydrates. Mandelic acid is the mildest, perfect for sensitive skin.

BHAs (Beta Hydroxy Acids)

Oil-soluble acids that penetrate into pores. The hero is salicylic acid, which:

  • Dissolves excess sebum

  • Clears congested pores

  • Reduces acne and blackheads

If you're oily or breakout-prone, BHA is your best friend.

PHAs (Poly Hydroxy Acids)

The gentlest exfoliants, ideal for sensitive skin. They offer mild resurfacing with added hydration.

How Often Should You Exfoliate?

Start with 1–2 times per week and build up to 2–3 times based on your skin's tolerance. Over-exfoliation is one of the fastest ways to damage your barrier—more is not better.

The Verdict

Dermatologists overwhelmingly prefer chemical exfoliation because it's controlled, precise, and respects the skin barrier. Physical scrubs are best reserved for body skin, where the barrier is thicker and more resilient.
