How to Build a Skincare Routine from Scratch — The Right Order, Every Time
The skincare industry has a talent for making things more complicated than they need to be. Twelve-step routines, layering hierarchies, ingredient interactions — it can feel overwhelming before you have even started.
The truth is that an effective skincare routine does not need to be complicated. It needs to be consistent. Here is how to build one.
The four fundamentals
Every skincare routine, however simple or advanced, comes back to four steps:
1. Cleanse — Remove impurities, excess oil, sunscreen and makeup. Prepare the skin to receive everything that follows.
2. Treat — Apply targeted active ingredients — serums, treatments — that address your specific skin concerns.
3. Moisturise — Support the skin barrier, lock in hydration, and prepare skin for the environment.
4. Protect — In the morning, apply SPF. This is non-negotiable.
The right order
Skincare products should generally be applied thinnest to thickest — this ensures each product can reach the skin rather than sitting on top of a heavier formula. A typical order looks like this:
Morning:
Cleanser → Serum(s) → Moisturiser → SPF
Evening:
Cleanser → Treatment serum or retinol → Moisturiser
Choosing the right products for your skin type
Dry or sensitive skin: Start with a gentle cream cleanser like PREPARE. Use a hydrating serum like QUENCH and a barrier-support moisturiser like H₂∞. Introduce actives slowly.
Oily or blemish-prone skin: A degreasing cleanser like CLEAR helps control excess sebum without stripping. PEEL PADS used 2-3 times per week manage congestion. Keep moisturiser light.
Combination skin: A gentle acid cleanser like REVEAL balances without over-drying. Treat different zones differently if needed.
Ageing concerns: C20 in the morning and RETINOVA or FREEZE in the evening form a powerful anti-ageing duo. Always follow with SPF.
How many products do you actually need?
You do not need a shelf full of products to have an effective routine. A cleanser, one targeted serum, a moisturiser, and an SPF — used consistently — will produce better results than ten products used inconsistently.
Start simple. Add targeted treatments once the basics are embedded as a habit.
