Hyaluronic Acid: Why Molecular Weight Is the Thing Nobody Tells You About
Hyaluronic acid is in almost every skincare product on the market. Moisturisers, serums, toners, eye creams — if it claims to hydrate, it probably contains hyaluronic acid. And yet a significant number of people who use hyaluronic acid regularly feel that it does very little for their skin.
The reason is almost always molecular weight.
What is hyaluronic acid?
Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring molecule found in skin, joints, and connective tissue. Its remarkable property is its ability to hold up to 1,000 times its own weight in water — making it one of the most effective hydrating ingredients available.
As we age, the skin's natural hyaluronic acid content decreases. Topical hyaluronic acid replenishes this — but only if it can actually reach the layers of skin where hydration matters.
The molecular weight problem
Here is what most brands do not tell you: hyaluronic acid molecules come in different sizes, and the size determines where in the skin the molecule can penetrate.
High molecular weight hyaluronic acid — the most common form used in skincare — is too large to penetrate the skin barrier. It sits on the surface, creates a film that temporarily improves how skin looks and feels, but does not deliver lasting hydration to the deeper layers.
Low molecular weight hyaluronic acid is small enough to penetrate deeper into the skin, delivering hydration where it is actually needed and producing results that last.
Ultra-low molecular weight hyaluronic acid penetrates even deeper — and this is where the most significant hydrating effects occur.
4D hydration
The most sophisticated approach to hyaluronic acid formulation uses multiple molecular weights simultaneously — delivering hydration at the surface, mid-layers, and deeper dermis at the same time. This is what is meant by multi-dimensional or 4D hyaluronic acid technology.
QUENCH by Emerald Derma
QUENCH is a 4D ultra-low molecular weight hydrating serum that uses hyaluronic acid across multiple molecular weights to deliver deep, lasting hydration at every level of the skin. It is formulated to address the limitations of standard hyaluronic acid products — delivering the kind of genuine, persistent hydration that surface-only formulas cannot achieve.
How to use QUENCH: Apply 3-4 drops to clean skin, morning and evening. Press gently into skin rather than rubbing. Follow with moisturiser to seal in hydration. Can be layered with other serums — apply thinnest to thickest.
