Sun Protection
SPF Every Day: Why Daily Sun Protection Is the Most Important Step in Your Routine
If there is one non-negotiable step in any skincare routine, it is this: SPF, every day, without exception.
Not just on sunny days. Not just on holiday. Every day.
It is, without question, the single most evidence-backed skincare habit you can adopt — more than any serum, more than any treatment, more than any trending ingredient. And yet it is the step that most people either skip entirely or treat as optional.
Why UV damage is the biggest driver of skin ageing
Approximately 80-90% of visible skin ageing — fine lines, wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, loss of firmness, uneven texture — is caused not by the passage of time but by cumulative UV exposure. This is sometimes called photoageing, and the research behind it is overwhelming.
The UV radiation responsible for this damage comes in two forms. UVB causes sunburn and is highest in summer and at midday. UVA penetrates more deeply, damages collagen and elastin, and — critically — is present at relatively consistent levels year-round, regardless of cloud cover, and passes through glass.
That last point is worth sitting with. UVA passes through glass. The UV exposure you receive sitting near a window, driving, or working in a bright office is real and cumulative — even when you never set foot outside.
What broad spectrum means
Broad spectrum SPF protects against both UVA and UVB. A product that is not labelled broad spectrum may protect against sunburn (UVB) while leaving you completely unprotected against the UVA that drives skin ageing.
Always choose a broad spectrum SPF. Always.
Why SPF matters even more when using actives
If you use vitamin C, retinol, hydroxy acids, or any other active skincare ingredient, daily SPF is not optional — it is essential. These ingredients increase photosensitivity, meaning unprotected skin is more vulnerable to UV damage on the days you use them. All the work your active ingredients are doing can be undermined in minutes of unprotected sun exposure.
PROTECT by Emerald Derma
PROTECT is a daily broad spectrum SPF 50 formulated for everyday wear. It is designed to sit comfortably under makeup, not to leave a white cast, and not to feel like a separate product that disrupts your routine — because the best SPF is the one you will actually wear every day.
How to use PROTECT: Apply generously as the final step of your morning routine, after moisturiser. Reapply every two hours if you are spending extended time outdoors.
