Your Summer Skincare Survival Guide: How to Protect and Maintain Your Routine in the Heat
Summer is the season most people associate with glowing, healthy skin. Long days, warm light, a little colour. But for anyone using medical-grade skincare — and especially for anyone using actives like retinol, vitamin C, or chemical exfoliants — summer introduces a set of challenges that can quietly undo months of progress if you are not prepared.
Here is everything you need to know.
Why summer changes your skin
Heat increases sebum production. Humidity affects how your products absorb. Sweat can irritate the barrier. And UV exposure — the single biggest driver of skin ageing — intensifies significantly between May and September in the UK.
None of this means you have to pause your routine. It means you need to adapt it.
Step 1: Make SPF your non-negotiable
If you only do one thing this summer, wear SPF 50 every single morning without exception. Not SPF 15. Not SPF 30. SPF 50, broad spectrum, applied generously to the face and neck.
UVA is present year-round, but UVB — the radiation that causes burning and significantly drives skin cancer risk — peaks in summer. And if you are using any active ingredients (vitamin C, retinol, hydroxy acids), your skin is more photosensitive than it would otherwise be. SPF is not optional when you are using actives. It is the safety mechanism that makes those ingredients safe to use.
Emerald Derma PROTECT SPF 50 is specifically formulated to sit beautifully under makeup and work alongside clinical skincare. Use it daily.
Step 2: Reassess your actives
Retinol and chemical exfoliants like peel pads and hydroxy acid cleansers can increase photosensitivity. This does not mean you need to stop using them in summer — it means you need to be consistent with SPF and potentially reduce frequency if you are spending extended time outdoors.
If you are going on holiday somewhere particularly sunny, consider using your retinol products every other evening rather than nightly, and ensuring SPF reapplication every two hours when outdoors.
Step 3: Prioritise hydration
Heat and air conditioning are both dehydrating. Even oily skin can become dehydrated in summer — which the skin compensates for by producing more sebum, creating a cycle of oiliness and tightness.
Hyaluronic acid serums like QUENCH are particularly valuable in summer. Apply to slightly damp skin before your moisturiser to lock in as much moisture as possible.
Step 4: Keep products cool and clean
Heat degrades active ingredients — particularly vitamin C and retinol. Store your serums away from direct sunlight and avoid leaving products in a hot car or by a sunny window. A cool, dark bathroom cabinet or even a skincare fridge extends product potency significantly.
Step 5: Reapply, reapply, reapply
SPF applied in the morning has a finite period of effectiveness. If you are spending time outdoors — at a garden party, the beach, or even a summer lunch — reapply every two hours. SPF powder is an excellent option for reapplication over makeup.
Summer is not a reason to scale back your skincare. It is a reason to be smarter about it.
