Winter vs Summer Skincare: How to Adapt Your Routine for the Seasons

Winter vs Summer Skincare: How to Adapt Your Routine for the Seasons

Your skin is an organ that responds to its environment. As temperatures, humidity, and UV levels shift through the year, your skincare routine should adapt to match.

A rigid, year-round routine either under-delivers in winter or overwhelms in summer. Here's how to adjust intelligently.

Winter: The Dehydration Season

What Happens to Your Skin

  • Cold air holds less moisture, and indoor heating strips it further

  • The barrier becomes more permeable, leading to trans-epidermal water loss

  • Skin feels tight, looks dull, and is more prone to irritation

  • Existing conditions like eczema and rosacea often flare

Routine Adjustments

Cleansing: Switch from gel to cream or milk cleansers. Avoid foaming formulas that strip lipids.

Hydration: Layer a hyaluronic acid serum under a richer moisturiser. Apply serum to damp skin to maximise absorption. Look for ceramides and peptides in your moisturiser for barrier support.

Actives: Reduce retinoid frequency to every other night if dryness or irritation increases. You can maintain Vitamin C and exfoliants, but watch for sensitivity.

SPF: Still daily—UV rays penetrate cloud cover and glass. But you may prefer a more hydrating SPF formula.

Added Step: Consider a weekly hydrating mask or facial oil (applied as the final layer) for intensive moisture replenishment.

Summer: The Protection Season

What Happens to Your Skin

  • Heat and humidity increase sebum production

  • Sweat can mix with skincare and makeup, leading to congestion

  • UV index peaks, making sun protection critical

  • Skin may feel oilier but can still be dehydrated

Routine Adjustments

Cleansing: A gentle gel cleanser is ideal. Double-cleanse in the evening to remove SPF and excess oil thoroughly.

Hydration: Switch to lighter, water-based moisturisers. You still need hydration—oily summer skin is often dehydrated skin overcompensating. A gel-cream or lightweight lotion works well.

Actives: Vitamin C is especially valuable in summer for its antioxidant protection against UV-induced free radicals. Retinoids can make skin more sun-sensitive—use only at night and never skip SPF. Some people reduce retinoid concentration in peak summer.

Exfoliation: Salicylic acid (BHA) helps keep summer-congested pores clear. Use 1–2 times per week.

SPF: Non-negotiable and needs upgrading—SPF 50 minimum, reapplied every two hours of sun exposure. Choose a lightweight, non-comedogenic formula that won't clog pores in humidity.

The Constants Year-Round

Regardless of season:

  • SPF every morning — the one rule that never changes

  • Gentle cleansing — never strip your barrier

  • One active serum — consistency drives results

  • Barrier support — ceramides and peptides always

The Transition Periods

Spring and autumn are transition seasons. Gradually adjust your routine over 2–3 weeks rather than switching everything at once. Your skin needs time to adapt to new conditions.
